Down, 6-2, in the bottom of the seventh, the Saints marched right on back with a string of hits, culminating in a weakly hit ball to first, that sophomore Cecilia Garrett would leg out, allowing Leah Zimmerman to run home in walk-off fashion, 7-6.
Bishop Dwenger heads to semi-state in miraculous fashion, behind the efforts of some pretty young stars.
“I had all emotions everywhere,” Garrett said after her walk-off grounder.
“We never gave up in the end, so it was just nice to finally pull it through.”
Freshman Lexi Linder crushed the game-tying two-RBI double earlier in the seventh.
“It was so special,” Linder said.
“Great opportunity, great everything.”
Meanwhile, at Homestead High, the Leo Lions wasted little time in scoring the game’s first run, and with the help of starting pitcher Ashley Miller, would add to that lead with a two-run home run.
Miller and Mackenzie Rust combined for a two-hit shutout, leading the Lions to a, 4-0, shutout and a regional title.
