Fort Wayne, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – The Bellmont High School Wrestling Team has a new look this year. Freshman athletes Andrea Hernandez and Trinity Coyne joined the team, becoming the first females to wrestle in the Braves’ program.
It all started in sixth grade, when the two girls decided to wrestle at Bellmont Middle School.
“I thought there were just there to prove a point, that they could do what boys could do and it didn’t have anything to do with wrestling.” Assistant Wrestling Coach Sean Faurote said. “I thought they would be here a couple days and then they’ll will figure out it’s too hard.”
The girls kept coming back, gaining respect from their coaches and teammates.
“Not a lot of them agreed with it, like oh a girl wrestler,” Andrea Hernandez said. “The more we stayed and showed them we aren’t going anywhere, the more they kind of starting being friends with us.”
Hernandez and Coyne are setting an example for younger girls in the wrestling community. On Friday, they will be participating in the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling Tournament.
