Community comes together to help family of teenage burn victim

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) – The effort to help the family of a Whitko High School student who was badly hurt in a house explosion is growing.

A local volunteer fire department is joining the cause and will host a chili and baked goods sale this weekend.

Teenager Summer West was badly burned when some type of propane gas explosion happened at her home Friday. She’s being treated at St. Joe Hospital’s burn unit in Fort Wayne.

The sale is set to take place Saturday from noon until 3 p.m. at the fire station in the 100 block of North State Street.

It is hosted by the Cleveland Township Volunteer Fire Department, and all proceeds will go toward the recovery of 16-year-old Summer West.

Summer is recovering at a Fort Wayne hospital from second- and third-degree burns. She is expected to remain there for an extended period of time.

Already, friends and strangers have contributed several thousand dollars through a Go Fund Me page.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
