Fugitive on the lam arrested in LaGrange County

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – LaGrange County authorities located a wanted fugitive who police say nearly ran over a sheriff’s deputy Friday morning.

LaGrange County law enforcement arrested 21-year-old Vincent Chilcote at a home in the 10,000 block of East US 20 around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Police arrested him without incident.

On Friday just before 1:30 a.m., Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of West Otter Lake Public Access site off of US 20 near SR 327 in Jackson Township.

They were working off a tip that a wanted fugitive, Chilcote, might be in a pickup truck there.

Chilcote had active arrest warrants out of Steuben, LaGrange, and Noble Counties for failing to appear for a burglary charge and other theft charges.

Once there, officers spotted the pickup in question, and Chilcote was in the driver’s seat.

While they walked up to him, police said Chilcote tried to make a run for it and nearly ran over a deputy in the process.

The officer ended up firing shots at Chilcote.

Chilcote took off and ended up ditching his truck in a bean field near the intersection of CR 900 West and CR 300 N.

Police weren’t able to find him.

The deputy’s name who was involved in the incident is being withheld pending a full investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, and has been placed on administrative leave per Sheriff’s Office policy.

Then on Saturday, police found Chilcote at a home about 5 miles west of where he initially ran from officers.

Police took him into custody in the 10,000 block of East US 20 without incident.
