GAS CITY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A four-day search for a missing 10-year-old comes to a tragic end.

Wednesday morning, Indiana State Police say they found the body of Skylea Rayn Carmack inside a shed at her family home wrapped in a plastic trash bag, and the person who reported her missing in the first place is now facing charges in her death.

The girl disappeared Saturday, Aug. 31, around 4 p.m. from her dad and stepmom’s home, and investigators issued a Silver Alert.

Police said that Skylea’s stepmother, 34-year-old Amanda Carmack, reported the girl missing in person.

Over the weekend and into the week, local residents fired up a robust volunteer effort, going door to door, with flyers displaying Skylea’s picture.

The search came to a halt Wednesday morning around 3 a.m. in her Gas City home.

Amanda Carmack, 34, is facing murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, strangulation and battery charges in the death of her 10-year-old step-daughter Skylea Carmack.

Police arrested her step-mother, 34-year-old Amanda Carmack, on murder, neglect of a dependent, strangulation and domestic battery charges.

Investigators believe Skylea was killed between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday.

Police say she was strangled to death, but a coroner will ultimately rule the cause and manner of death.

Carmack is now incarcerated in the Grant County.

Police say at this point no one else was involved.

“The Gas City, Grant County is an area that cares. An area that loves. We wanted to bring this girl back safe, but unfortunately, that’s not the result we got,” Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Slocum said during the news conference.

Investigators said evidence lead them to make the arrest, but couldn’t say either way whether Carmack told the police anything.
