Cooling shelters open to help people cope with excessive heat

(Fort Wayne’s NBC) — As the temperature rises and heat indices creep past 100 degrees, communities across the area are offering relief from the heat.

Here in town, the Rescue Mission serves as the primary cooling station location for men, women and families when temperatures reach 80 degrees. The cooling shelter hours are 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

But because of high temperatures, the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory will also serve as a cooling station from noon – 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

We are collecting information about cooling shelters across the area. You can find a map below that will be updated as we collect more listings.

Other cooling shelters:

In DeKalb County, officials say people can cool off in local businesses during normal business hours.

In Noble County, officials say municipal centers are open to the public to cool off.
