Suspects arrested at children’s zoo after chase, shootout in the street

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Two people were arrested at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo following a chase in the streets nearby, with shots fired between the vehicles.

Fort Wayne police said detectives in the Gang and Violent Crimes Unit, along with patrol officers, responded  after being notified of a situation in the area of Wells Street and Fernhill Avenue.

What was reported to be a chase involving two cars and an exchange of gunfire ended when one car ran into a telephone pole in the 3400 block of Wells Street. Two people ran from the vehicle — and into the zoo.

Zoo officials assisted in evacuating part of the popular family destination as police tracked down and arrested the two suspects. A third was taken into custody off zoo property.

The trio face charges including illegal possession of a handgun and criminal recklessness. They are: Matthew Thomas Fox Jr.; Jontra Lynn Clark; and Travis William Ladd.

Police recovered evidence including:

  • a Ruger EC9s 9MM semi-automatic
  • a Taurus PT111 9MM semi-automatic
  • 9 grams of crystal methamphetamine
  • 4 grams of marijuana
  • 4 hydrocodone pills
  • 4 digital scales
  • several ceramic smoking devices
