FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – A suspected gunman remains at large in a deadly shooting outside a Lake Avenue barbershop.

Police are nervous because that suspect’s name is now public knowledge.

Items left outside Legendary Barber Shop pay tribute to 46-year old Michael LoVett Junior, who was shot multiple times, then died April 9th right outside the shop.

A warrant has now been issued for the arrest of 34-year old James Dodson Jr., after a witness in court documents said there was a heated argument between LoVett and Dodson while Dodson was getting a haircut.

Police say surveillance video from a nearby gas station showed Dodson later returning in a Lexus SUV, getting out and crossing the street, before, according to court papers, Dodson and two other men confronted LoVett.

Court documents say the video then shows Dodson and an unidentified man in a black and white sweatshirt opening fire on LoVett, before they fled the scene and left him for dead.

Tarus Anderson, a friend of LoVett’s who works at a barbershop across town, is still shocked by the brazen act of violence.

“We just can’t have people walking around doing heinous things like that, it’s ridiculous, it really is,” Anderson said.

We asked police if we could publish the surveillance video to generate tips from the public, but were told it’s being held back as part of an ongoing investigation.

Police did not place Dodson’s name under seal, because that would prevent law enforcement agencies nationwide from getting the information and being able to keep a lookout for the murder suspect.

But the department says publishing his name can put police and the public at risk.

“They have a tendency to maybe witness intimidate, tamper with evidence, do things that they wouldn’t normally do because they know now they have a warrant instead of kind of laying low,” said city police spokesperson Officer Sofia Rosales-Scatena.

Fort Wayne police say they’re working to find Dodson and ID the other men seen in the video.
