ARGOS, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – One student aboard a school bus has died after a flatbed truck rear-ended the bus.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. on US 31 and 13th Road. The Eastern Pulaski Community School bus was stopped at a railroad crossing when a flatbed truck crashed into it.

A teenage boy who was in the left rear of the bus died at the scene.

Another 14-year-old student was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Some students had complaints of pain and were taken to a local hospital.

Police say 38 eighth grade students and three chaperones were on the bus at the time of the crash. They were headed to see “Elf the Musical” at the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw.

Police say the parents of the slain student have been notified.

The northbound lanes of US 31 are closed. Officials expect the road to be restricted for hours as they work to reconstruct the scene and continue their investigation. Southbound lanes have reopened between 13th and 14th roads.

Toxicology results are pending for both drivers, which is required by law for vehicle operators involved in serious injury or fatal crashes. Weather is not believed to have been a factor at the time of the crash.
