FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – An Indiana lawmaker is accused of racism after he posted a photo of nooses under an article of a black man guilty of rape.
A Fort Wayne man pleaded guilty to three counts of rape on Thursday. 22-year-old Marquise Dozier admitted his involvement to police after they said fingerprint and D-N-A evidence tied him to the crimes.
Dozier faces up to 72-years in prison. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 27th.
Indiana State Lawmaker Jim Lucas responded to WISH-TV’s news article on Facebook about Dozier’s guilty plea.
Lucas posted a picture of two nooses within the comment section. Several people across the state reacted to the picture.
“How can we have this hate from our politician in the office, the one that we expect to protect everybody, stands and says they oughta been hung,” Calvin Kelly, a neighbor said.
We talked with a few people and they said the picture reminded them of history of the lynching of black people in the United States.
“I have to worry about my children,” Kelly said. “I have to worry about my people. It sends a fear message. It sends a message that it’s alright to hang them.”
In light of the controversy, Lucas posted a response on Facebook.
“I believe in public execution, by hanging of murderers, child molesters and rapists after absolute proof of guilt in a jury trial…No matter what their color. Period.”
Lucas shared another Facebook post.
“Where was the outcry when I posted the same picture on a story about a white man accused of rape?”
“Stand firm. You have an army of support,” Nicholas Smith, a Facebook user responded to Lucas’s post.
We reached out to Lucas’s spokesperson to ask for an interview. They said Lucas’s Facebook post would be his only comments. However, Lucas did tell the Indy Star “He’s not racist…and does not believe the photo is racist.”
