COLUMBIA CITY, IND. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – The Columbia City community gathered Wednesday night to pay their respects to K9 Officer Cas. The Whitley County K9 who was killed in a fiery crash Wednesday afternoon. The air felt heavy as tears were filled in people eyes.

Fort Wayne’s NBC obtained a copy of the gripping audio from the scene, audio that illustrates the impact the suspect’s decision to flee made on an entire community. The audio shows the heartbreaking sound of Deputy Gary Archbold from the Whitley County Sheriff’s department moments after the police chase ended.

Folks in the small town of Columbia City came together to honor Cas’ commitment to their community.

“Our little town got rocked by something pretty big,” said Aylsa Babcock who lives in Columbia City.

A procession was held with lights and sirens on, as the community stood in silence with their hands over their hearts, others stood in salute.

“Like any human officer, she was given a special trip home,” said Babcock.

Cas’ special trip home was with a flag draped casket. Babcock called Cas a true hero. “She died doing her job. She deserves a lot more, she deserved to live a lot longer. That was my way of giving her some respect,” she said.

“I was just in shock,” said Jody Engle who lives in Columbia City. Engle says she watched as Deputy Archbold trained Cas on the courthouse lawn and said Cas was a fireball and a dedicated servant.

“It’s like losing one of your own. It really is. It’s going to hit everybody really hard for a long time,” said Engle.
