BLUFFTON, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Police say an individual has died in an industrial accident at the Valero Renewable Fuels plant in Bluffton.
Kyle Randall, Bluffton Police Department’s Chief of Police, said they received several calls from employees at the plant around 10 a.m., saying an employee was missing.
The employees told police they feared an industrial accident had taken place.
Police said the individual was performing maintenance work on a large auger when he got stuck, and later died.
The Wells County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as 42-year-old Ryan West from Bainbridge, Ohio. Police say West worked for an outside contractor, Diversified Industrial Services, and was not employed directly by Valero.
Lillian Riojas, Director of Media Relations with the company, issued the following statement on the matter:
“We are saddened by the loss of an employee with Diversified Industrial Services who was working at Valero’s Bluffton, Indiana plant this morning. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, co-workers and friends. The health and safety of all workers in our facilities is our priority. As for details about the incident, a complete investigation will be conducted. Also, we are cooperating with local and state agencies on investigations they have underway already.”
