Boyfriend in fatal child beating case to be sentenced

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Mitchell Vanryn, charged with battery in the fatal beating of a 2-year-old, will be sentenced today.

28-year-old Mitch Vanryn beat 2-year-old Malakai Garrett to death in November of 2017, leaving bruises all over his body and an abdomen full of blood from a lacerated pancreas.

During Vanryn’s trial on March 24, the jury found him not guilty of murder, and guilty of aggravated battery and guilty of domestic battery.

Vanryn was the live-in boyfriend of Malakai’s mother Amber Garrett. Graphic texts between the two depicted him being beyond frustrated that the toddler wasn’t potty trained and kept soiling his diapers, forcing Vanryn to repeatedly bathe him and wash clothes and sheets.

Vanryn is set to be sentenced at the Allen County Courthouse on Tuesday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
