Parents facing neglect charges after passing out with child in Walmart parking lot

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A Fort Wayne couple has been arrested after police found them passed out in a Walmart parking lot with their child in the car after using heroin.

According to probable cause documents, a caller reported to police that a person was unresponsive in a car in the parking lot of a local Walmart around midnight on Tuesday.

When police arrived, they located the couple in a silver colored Buick. Officers said both the woman in the driver’s seat, Megan Gawthrop, and the man in the passenger seat, Bryce Carrier, were passed out.

Their two-year-old child was sitting in Gawthrop’s lap playing with the steering wheel, turn signals, and windshield wipers.

The officer said he then opened up the passenger side door, waking them up. Gawthrop said she and Carrier had used “a small amount” of heroin earlier in the day before driving to Walmart.

Carrier said they went to the store to buy their son a toy, but they got into an argument and fell asleep in the car. He said he believed they were asleep for about an hour before the officer woke them.

Gawthrop, 22, is facing charges of neglect of a dependent and OWI charges. Carrier, 22, faces a charge of neglect of a dependent.
