NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A father and his two daughters have died after their car slid off the snowy roads and into a river on Monday.
Noble County police say they received a call around 10 a.m. saying a vehicle had gone into the Elkhart River near County Road 700 West and Ball Road in Ligonier.
Emergency crews located a white Toyota passenger car upside down and completely submerged in the river.
Police say 50-year-old JJ Reyes was driving the car with his two daughters,15-year-old Zulia Reyes and 13-year-old Valeria Reyes. He approached a curve on the snowy road and lost control of the vehicle. Police say it appears his speed was too fast for conditions.
The car slid off the road and went into a ditch before sliding into the river. It was carried about 180 feet down the river before it flipped over and was submerged. Ligonier Fire Department personnel pulled the vehicle from the river and pronounced the three dead at the scene.
Zulia Reyes was a sophomore student at West Noble High School and Valeria Reyes was an 8th grade student at West Noble Middle School.
West Noble High School was saddened to learn of the passing of Zulia Reyes this morning in a car accident. She was beloved by all who knew her. Parents hug your child and be available to talk with them as needed. We will have grief counselors here at school to help as well.
