10-year-old Sammie Vance is receiving another award.

Almost two years ago, Sammie started the buddy bench project here in Fort Wayne, getting three benches made out of recycled caps for her school, Haley Elementary.

Buddy benches are all about creating friendships. When kids feel left out, they can sit on the bench, and that signals to others that they’re in need of some company.

The idea caught on at Sammie’s school and hundreds of other schools across the country.

And now Sammie is being honored with an award from the International Juggler’s Association.

It’s called the IJA Sammie Vance Youth Civil Achievement Award.

Sammie and her mom sat down with anchor Julian Teekaram to talk about the honor.
