(NBC) Suit up! Friday is National Playing Card Day.

During the 9th century, Chinese people started playing games with money and paper objects.

Playing cards were first seen during Europe’s early Renaissance.

That’s when the four suits were developed.

One theory says the Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades represent the hierarchy of the aristocracy, clergy, military and peasantry.

Among the more popular card games are poker, spades, hearts, black jack, bridge and gin rummy.
