Fort Wayne student earns prestigious national honor for Buddy Benches program

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- We've told you a lot over the past few years about Fort Wayne's Sammie Vance, a 6th grade student at Blackhawk Middle School in The Fort who helped create a program that makes certain people of any age can make a new friend.

Now?

News of another amazing honor.

Sammie is one of the national recipients of the prestigious Power of Children Awards, according to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

It's a program that recognizes the hard work of students, grades 6 through 11, who improve the lives of the people around them.

Sammie worked with her school to create her company that makes Buddy Benches.

They are public benches made from recycled plastic bottle caps that are donated, and if anyone is in need of a friend, they can simply take a seat!

Our congratulations to you, Sammie!
