‘Intense gun battle’ leaves one officer uninjured, one suspect with non-life-threatening injuries

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - An overnight gun battle forces one Fort Wayne police officer to defend himself against a shooting suspect.

Police responded to the area of South Hanna Street and East Maple Grove Avenue to a call of shots fired just after midnight.

According to police, while heading to the area officers could hear multiple gunshots and continued while even after they arrived.

Police say gun fire was exchanged between two groups in the area.

The FWPD says the scene appeared to be "extremely dangerous" and a "chaotic situation".

During the gun battle, police say an officer was confronted by a suspect with a gun and the officer was forced to protect himself.

Police say the suspect suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was transferred to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Once the suspect is medically cleared, police say he will be interviewed by detectives and preliminary charges will be pending.

As for the officer's condition, he was uninjured by the suspect.

The Shooting team, Duty Chief, Detectives, Indiana State Police, Crime Scene and the Prosecutor all made the scene to assist in conducting a thorough investigation.

The Indiana State Police will conduct a parallel investigation as is protocol for all Officer Involved Shootings.

This incident remains under investigation.
