FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Court documents released in the beating death of a 17-month-old reveal the child suffered extreme internal trauma while in the care of his mother's boyfriend, who is charged in the case.
Probable cause documents say police were called to the 2700 block of Millbrook Drive around 12:30 p.m. Monday.
27-year-old Shaquille Rowe told first responders he was in the shower and heard crying so he got out and found 17-month-old Aiden Mishawn Clark was not breathing.
Police went inside and found Aiden on the floor inside the apartment. EMS personnel said they noticed bruising around his neck and chest and believed it was from some sort of abuse, so the homicide team was called.
Rowe told police Aiden's mother Jasmine Clark left him home alone with the kids.
First responders said Rowe asked, “Why did she leave me in the house like this?”
He said he was playing a video game and then watched a movie before getting in the shower, which is when he said he heard Aiden crying.
He told police he then got out of the shower to check on the kids and found one of them standing and crying as Aiden was lying on the ground next to an air mattress.
Shaquille said Aiden was wheezing so he ran to get a phone from a neighbor to call 911 and tried CPR.
Police say Jasmine later arrived and was very emotional, asking what was going on. She said she left around 10:45 a.m., leaving Shaquille with the kids but refused to speak to police further.
The medical examiner said he found extreme internal trauma and external bruises around Aiden's chest and neck area.
Rowe is currently charged with battery to a minor causing death and neglect of a dependent resulting in death. His next court hearing is set for Monday.
