FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - Members and workers at the Central Branch YMCA in Fort Wayne are heartbroken after the death of Gwen Martin-Barbee.
Authorities identified 63-year-old Martin as the woman killed when a car struck her home in the 5200 Block of McClellan Street. Police tell Fort Wayne's NBC News she was asleep at the time when the out-of-control vehicle left the road and struck her house.
A post on the Central Branch YMCA Facebook page Tuesday says, "2020 has been a hard year. Today has been especially hard for the Central Branch as many of our hearts are broken by the loss of someone integral to our community. As this year comes to an end, love each other well."
The branch's website also has a page remembering Martin. "For 26 years, Gwen Martin-Barbee has worked for the Central YMCA. She has been a key ingredient to building a family atmosphere at the branch. She knew how to get people to smile with her wry humor and fun disposition. She also was an excellent fundraiser who helped engage hundreds of members in the cause of the Y. She has been the matriarch of her family and a wise sage for generations to look up to."
Police say the driver and passenger of the car that crashed into Martin's house ran away Monday. Police deployed a K-9 to track them down, but that effort was unsuccessful. If you have any information that could help police call CrimeStoppers at 260-436-STOP or leave a tip by clicking here.
