Turkey Rally 2020 proves to be huge success in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- Turkey Rally 2020 wrapped up Thursday night after a day's worth of giving in The Fort.

Even during a pandemic, the people in The Fort help their neighbors so much, and hearts are full!

Why?

Because stomachs are going to be full this Thanksgiving!

A lofty goal of collecting 600 frozen turkeys?

Met and then some, Thursday.

Volunteers at the Kroger stores at Dupont and Coventry and at the Community Harvest Food Bank collected 657 turkeys, 3 chickens, one ham, more than 5,400 pounds of other food and?

$50,000!

The money included a $10,000 match from First Merchants Bank, a $15,000 donation from BKD, which is annual and a $15,000 gift from a new friend of the food bank.

You put that together with all the $5, $10, $20 and so-on donations?

You get some grateful staff members at the food bank who can't wait to deliver the holiday food.

Community Harvest Food Bank Executive President, Carmen Cumberland said, "People are so generous, and times have been so crazy that I think people appreciate being able to, in a safe, socially-distanced way, help out because they can. It puts a smile on my face!"

Sponsors for this year's Turkey Rally included Kroger, First Merchants Bank, WOWO Radio and Fort Wayne's NBC.
