Escaped Allen Co. inmate quickly apprehended, hospitalized

59-year old Eric Tate is now locked up facing a murder charge in the September 22nd shooting death of James Hines on E. Lewis Street.

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - An Allen County Jail trusty escaped for about 10 minutes before being taken to a local hospital after being found unresponsive when returned to a cell.

Around 9:44 a.m., Allen County Confinement Officers escorted trusties to the dumpsters to remove garbage.

According to officers, inmate 53-year-old Michael Leask ran towards Three Rivers Apartments in an attempt to escape.

To gain perspective, trusty is a prisoner who is given special privileges or responsibilities in return for good behavior.

Officers say they immediately called other police units to search for Leask.

FWPD says they found Leask attempting to hide in the woods behind Three Rivers Apartments where he resisted arrest while being taken into custody at 9:54 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers day Leask was placed in a cell while an observation cell was being prepared for him.

According to officers, when they went back to move Leask they found him unresponsive in the cell.

Once paramedics arrived they took over medical care and transported Leask to a local hospital.

Due to the nature of the investigation, there is no other information being released at this time.
