fire

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — The Allen County Coroner's Office says a two-year-old child pulled from a house fire on Chancery Place Thursday has died.

The coroner's office confirmed with Fort Wayne's NBC that one of the three children who were rescued from a fire in the 3800 block of Chancery Place early Thursday morning died from her injuries.

The child has been identified as two-year-old Hazel DeFord.

Her cause and manner of death are pending, the coroner says.

The toddler's mother and two siblings remain in critical condition as investigators piece together what sparked the fire.

The other two children and their mother who were pulled from the home remain in critical condition.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department said firefighters were called to the home at about 4:50 a.m. and found four people inside who were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to get the fire in the living room under control, a release sent by FWFD says.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
