FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- A transgender Carroll High School senior is considering transferring to another school after the district included her birth name in the list of boys to be chosen for Homecoming king.
Grace Grabner identifies as a female, and has for the past six years.
So she was horrified last week when her birth name was included among all the males in her class to be voted on for homecoming king, with the list distributed to her classmates.
"It was embarrassing and it took me back to middle school when that was the hardest time. It reminded me of everything that happened in middle school and how people treated me," Grabner said.
A Northwest Allen County Schools spokeswoman said the lists of girls names and boys names were computer-generated based on the official ones listed on transcripts, saying it was an honest error.
"We made a mistake on our end and we apologize profusely that this error happened where we inadvertantly took one student who should have been on one list and put them on the opposite list. That was our responsibility and our fault, and we feel terrible about it," Lizette Downey said.
Grabner says the ongoing bullying and harrassment by classmates has taken its toll, and she wants the district to address that culture.
