Efforts to help out kids and adults suffering from debilitating muscle diseases are being hurt by COVID-19. The Fort Wayne firefighters "Fill the Boot" campaign is way down on donations for MDA, and a virtual online fund-raising drive only is getting much of the blame.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – The International Association of Fire Fighters' (IAFF) annual Fill the Boot campaign is going virtual this year.

For 66 years, firefighters have collected money for the campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Typically, firefighters are out at businesses and street corners to help raise the funds, but this year they are taking things virtual.

"IAFF members display an unwavering support for MDA year after year, raising critical funds and awareness to help our families get the care they need," MDA CEO and President Lynn O'Connor Vos said. "We are so thankful to the IAFF for continuing its commitment to cure neuromuscular disease and for the flexibility to go virtual through this pandemic to protect everyone on the frontlines in our communities."

If you would like to donate to the MDA’s Frontline COVID-19 Emergency Fund to continue services for more than 250,000 people living with neuromuscular diseases across the country, you can do so online.

Donations can be made starting today through the Fort Wayne Fire L0124 on their website or Facebook page.
