NEW HAVEN, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - A New Haven non-profit will host their 2nd Annual Backpack Giveaway.
LEARN Resource Center will host the event on Monday.
Leaders with the organization said more than 750 students (Kindegarten - 12th grade) will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies.
They said local businesses and organizations have pitched in to make the event possible. Beacon Federal Credit Union has recently donated 384 additional backpacks to the cause. 3Rivers Federal Credit Union also donated more than 160 backpacks, and Costco donated 200 backpacks filled with school supplies. Other organizations that helped included SDI LaGarga, PHP, Murphy Insurance, Hockemeyer Family Eye Care, etc.
The backpack giveaway will take place on Monday, from 5-7 p.m. at New Haven Intermediate School located at 919 Homestead Drive in New Haven.
Most backpacks will include a face mask, hand sanitizer, pencil box/pouch, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue sticks, folders, spiral notebook/loose paper pack, etc.
Group leaders said children must be inside a vehicle in order to receive a backpack.
Sharon Wilson, Executive Director said, "We know that COVID-19 has impacted so many families financially that we decided to move forward with holding our Ready-to-LEARN backpack giveaway again this year to help alleviate some of the costs for kids to return to school. This year, we've made it a drive-thru pick-up to eliminate families from having to stand
in line. Whether children are attending school in class or online, they will still need school supplies. As one of the only organizations giving away backpacks this August, we want to give away as many as we can. We live in such a generous community that I believe we could giveaway 1,000 backpacks with supplies."
