FORT WAYNE, Ind. (FORT WAYNE'S NBC) - The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons are officially a part of the Horizon League.
The transition from the Summit League to the Horizon, aside from a more efficient travelling schedule, brings a myriad of benefits to PFW athletics.
"15 of the 16 sports we offer, they offer championships," PFW athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton said, via ZOOM press conference.
"We're confident we can bring stength and value to the Horizon League for years to come."
Entering his seventh season as head coach of Mastodons basketball, PFW head coach Jon Coffman is enthralled with the move.
"I love what it does for our brand and our region for recruiting, for our fan base," Coffman said.
"The Horizon League carries a lot of weight, particularly in Indiana."
A rivalry can grow greater as the Mastodons join fellow Indiana school IUPUI, a move PFW women's basketball head coach Niecee Nelson approves, as she wants as many fans as possible supporting the team, nearby.
"Our parents and fans now will get to travel with us to road games in building that fan base, and then our natural rivalry, we'll get to create that natural rivalry down the street with IUPUI," Nelson said.
