Woman, horse die after minivan vs. buggy accident


ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A woman is dead and two girls were injured after a minivan rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy Tuesday morning.

Police say they were called to a crash involving two vehicles around 7:45 a.m. on SR 124, a quarter-mile east of West of CR 200 East in Rural Monroe.

54-year-old Ida Schwartz was driving a buggy west on SR 124 and was slowing to enter a private driveway when she was rear-ended by a minivan.

Schwartz and two girls flew out of the buggy. Schwartz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The girls were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Police say the horse carrying the buggy was seriously injured and had to be put down.

The driver of the minivan, 34-year-old Zachary Knebel, declined medical treatment at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation at the time of this report.
