FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - A Fort Wayne family surprised their grandmother who turned 99-years-old.

Fort Wayne's NBC News talked with Svetlana Babich who helped organized the surprise. Babich said she and her family surprised her grandmother who turned 99-years-old on Saturday, May 23rd.

Babich's grandmother, Ester Babich, lives in a nursing home called Aperion Care University Park in Fort Wayne.

To limit the risk of spreading the coronavirus, family members created happy birthday posters and held them up outside their grandmother's window.

"I just wanted to make this birthday special for her," Babich said.

Nurses tried to wake up Ester from her nap, however, Babich's family decided to let their grandmother sleep. Babich said her family took pictures instead, and plans to send the photos to her grandmother as a present.

Babich said her grandmother moved to Fort Wayne in 1994. Ester has five children.

"It was very hard and emotional for all of us not being able to be next to her since we all are very close... so we were just making the best of it," said Babich.

Fort Wayne's NBC News wishes Ester a happy birthday!
