SOUTH WHITLEY, Ind. (FORT WAYNE'S NBC) - Whitko High School adds Julius Mays, a former Kentucky basketball player and Marion grad, as the new Athletic Director.

Mays was the Assistant Athletic Director at his high school alma mater for two years.

Now the former UK player takes his experiences and knowledge to programs at Whitko.

Mays' basketball career shows how he handled adversity.

Now he wants to show his adversity taught lessons, that he can bring forward to his new job and the students.

"It's really a blessing that I've been place I've been and I can share the experiences that I've had and really guide the youth. I know a lot of young athletes have big aspirations. It takes a lot, but it takes leadership too," Mays said.

"It's takes people who have been there before to kind of lead the path and show them how to get there. I'm looking forward to that as well.

Once NC State player and Wright State transfer, moved to Kentucky as a graduate transfer.

Mays finished his college career playing for Kentucky's Head Coach, John Calipari.

And from this post on social media, it's clear Mays made a strong impression on his coach too.
