FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- Neighbors in a near south side neighborhood are stunned that an 18-year-old was shot just outside their homes.
"I was making dinner and there was three gunshots. And we went out and investigated and there was a gentleman that was laying in the street, shot and screaming," neighbor Shanon Wilson says.
Wilson says she was stunned when she and her husband found the man lying on Arlington avenue near the intersection with West Rudisill Boulevard.
She says her husband stayed with the victim while she called 911.
"In our area, that's very unusual, and so it was very disruptive in the neighborhood. All the neighbors came out to see what happened. But we were very shocked," she says.
"We heard a pop, pop, pop, and it sounded like something that wasn't right, you know, for the neighborhood," David Robertson says.
Police say 18-year-old Tyriece Sutton was targeted, with someone calling his name before shooting at him more than once.
Paramedics rushed Sutton to the hospital in critical condition, but the next morning he had improved enough to be able to speak with detectives.
"Terrible thing. I hate to see the neighborhood go like this," Robertson says.
Retired gGE employee David Robertson and his family have lived on Arlington in the historic Fairmont neighborhood since 1977.
"I look on the internet and there's just too many people talking about hearing gunshots, it's too bad. Because like I said, this has really been a good neighborhood. We raised our family here, and it's been very nice," he says.
"I just would hate for people in our neighborhood to think that this is something that's going to keep happening. But of course we were very concerned for the gentleman, so we're happy that he's okay," WIlson says.
Police don't believe this shooting is connected to any other recent violence in Fort Wayne.
Detectives hope someone saw something or knows something and will come forward with what they know so they can catch Sutton's shooter.
If you know anything about this shooting, or have home security video from last night that shows anything out of the ordinary, police would like to speak with you.
