FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- A frightening scene played out in a Fort Wayne home as the homeowner shot through his front door to keep intruders out.
As you can imagine, the neighbors are uneasy now.
"Kinda scary considering there was a gunshot about 200 yards, if that, from where I'm standing," Lance Turner says.
Neighbors like Turner in the Lincoln Village neighborhood on the city's north side off Cook Road are concerned.
A resident told police at about one Thursday afternoon, he heard two men singing Christmas carols as they knocked on the door, then tried to kick it in.
The homeowner shot at the men, who took off -- one possibly in an older model teal car.
"I went to the window, the blinds were already open, and I saw an individual sprinting in between two houses going to another subdivision," the neighbor says.
"I didn't think that something like that would happen in this neighborhood. I mean, seriously, we've only lived here about a year, never really felt any problems with the neighborhood. It was always welcoming, neighbors were fine.," Turner says.
Turner installed his new video doorbell this weekend, which he ordered before the shooting across the street.
"We kinda caught a really good deal on Black Friday, so we just decided to put it in," Turner says.
The other neighbor, who asked not to be identified, says he talked with the shaken homeowner after police left.
"They heard the doorbell ring, they heard what appeared to be pounding on the door, and then they saw the door being kicked in or attempted to be kicked in. And that's when this individual fired his weapon into the door or the door area.," the neighbor says.
Some reports indicate a person showed up at a hospital shortly after the attempted break in with a gunshot wound.
"If something like that were to happen at my house, I'd probably would be not sleeping too well at night," Turner says.
Police have not arrested anyone in the incident.
