Horse riders explore Fort Wayne trails and advocate to bring horse trails to Allen County

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Several horse riders explored a Fort Wayne trail and advocated to bring horse trails to Allen County.

A non-profit called the Three Rivers Horse Trails hosted its first Trot the Trails event on Saturday. The event started at the Frontier Communications building in Fort Wayne.

People rode their horses on a 7.7 mile round trip trail.

“We haven’t had any incidents at all,” said Lynn Sroufe, President of Three Rivers Horse Trails Inc. “And the people who aren’t horse people, seems like they really like to see the horses out there. I’ve only had positive comments so far today.”

The purpose of the event is allow horse riders explore a Fort Wayne trail, and to also show the public that horse trails can be a great addition to Allen County.

Organizers of the event said Allen County has the highest horse population in Indiana and one of the highest in the nation.

Coordinators of the event said there are no equestrian trails in Allen County. They said people within the area have to travel more than an hour away for the nearest horse trail.

Organizers said adding equestrian trails in Allen County will keep riders in the area. They said this can help boost the local economy and make the county a more enjoyable place to live.

“It would be really great if we could get some out here that way everyone who has horses around this area could enjoy being closer to home, without having to travel so far,” Maci Burns, a rider said.

Coordinators of the event said more than 60 people attended the event, including people across northeast Indiana and Ohio.

The event started at 10 A.M. and ended at 12 P.M.

The event was a one-time event, however, organizers said, if the event is considered a success, there could be additional events in the upcoming year.
