FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Purdue Fort Wayne is observing National Suicide Prevention Week by hosting a week full of events.
University officials say every year, 1,100 college students die by suicide. This makes suicide the second-leading cause of death among college students.
The university is hoping to raise awareness of the issue by hosting events throughout the week. The events are free and open to the public.
An ongoing event the university will host is the third annual Shoes for Hope donation drive. The university is collecting 1,100 pairs of shoes, mirroring the number of college students who die by suicide each year. The shoes will be donated to several organizations. People can donate shoes at locations around campus.
