No, Fort Wayne isn’t getting a roundabout named after Pam from ‘The Office’

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Despite an online petition to rename the Union Chapel Roundabout after a character in a popular TV sitcom, county officials say “no way.”

Jenna Fischer, an actress who played receptionist “Pam Beesly” on NBC’s hit show The Office, was born in Fort Wayne.

She didn’t grow up here, but a soon-to-be student at Purdue University Fort Wayne wants to rename a roundabout near I-69 in her honor.

Joshua Schipper, the petition’s creator, says because Fischer didn’t’ stay long in Fort Wayne, county officials should name it after her character, “Pam Beesly.”

So far, more than 200 people have signed their name in approval.

“There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?” Pam Beesly famously said.

Despite that sentiment….the Allen County Board of Commissioners had this to say:

“While we are certain Mr. Schipper’s motives are sincere, the commissioners have not previously nor intend in the future to name any portion of our infrastructure on behalf of a fictitious character. The commissioners have on a couple of occasions honored the memory of a significant member of our community with the ceremonial naming of a bridge or portion of highway in their honor and will deal with such requests on a case-by-case situation.”
