FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – The Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the mother who was shot and killed in front of her two small children Tuesday evening.
The Coroner’s Office says 23-year-old Lashonda Denise Eldridge, of Fort Wayne, died from gunshot wounds.
It happened just after 9:40 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Anthony Boulevard between Antoinette and Pontiac.
Fort Wayne Police said a woman was inside her vehicle with her 5-year old daughter and young son, believed to be 2 years old, in the back seat.
Police found Eldridge suffering from gunshot wounds, and she later died from her injuries at the hospital.
The children inside the vehicle weren’t shot but did suffer minor injuries from broken glass.
A Fort Wayne Police Spokeswoman said the bullets were just inches away from hitting the kids.
“(The children) watched their mother die. This is unconsciounable. This is not something that should happen in any city, let alone ours. We are better than this,” said Sgt. Sofia Rosales-Scatena.
