New Haven group hosting backpack giveaway, dollar haircuts

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Elementary students can go back to school in style at a backpack giveaway taking place Monday.

The LEARN Resource Center is hosting the inaugural Ready-to-LEARN Backpack Giveaway Monday evening at the Adams Township Trustee Office.

During the event, more than 200 elementary students can receive a free backpack stuffed with supplies they need to go back to school.

The organization says they are hosting the event because more than half of students in the East Allen County School district live in low-income households. They say for some families, it is a decision between buying school supplies or paying the electric bill.

Local stylists are also participating in the event by offering $1 haircuts for elementary children. The funds will go to supporting LEARN Resource Center’s scholarship fund.

The event takes place from 5-7 Monday evening at 1125 Hartzell Street in New Haven.
