Henry to update garbage, recycling collection on Tuesday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Mayor Tom Henry has set a Tuesday afternoon news conference to address the status of garbage and recycling collection in the City of Fort Wayne.

The mayor will be joined by members of the Public Works Division and the Mayor’s Working Group on Garbage and Recycling.

The address is scheduled for 1 pm. and will originate from Citizens Square.

Last week, Henry’s Republican challenger pointed a finger at the incumbent and suggested that he is at least partially to blame for problems with Red River Waste Solutions, the company that took over collection in early 2018.

“I would declare Red River in breach of contract and we would move on and the taxpayers and customers of Fort Wayne will start receiving A-plus service,” Smith said.

Henry responded by citing improvement in service — and noting that missed pick-ups that do occur are due largely to a shortage of workers.

The issue figures to loom large as voters assess the candidates in the run-up to the November election.
