FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – A Fort Wayne man who admitted to setting his wife on fire and killing her last year will spend 65 years behind bars for her murder.
Eddie Caldwell, 55, pleaded guilty to the murder of his estranged wife, 68-year-old Lizzie Caldwell, and an Allen County Judge handed him his sentence Friday in court.
Fort Wayne’s NBC previously reported that Caldwell broke into his estranged wife’s home in 5600 block of South Harrison Street on Sept. 12, 2018.
Prosecutors say Caldwell bought 34 cents of gas, poured gasoline on himself and his wife, and then lit the two of them on fire with a butane lighter.
Caldwell described how he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, and said he was angry.
A neighbor says Lizzie Caldwell ran to her front door smelling of gasoline, and told her that her estranged husband set her on fire while she was sleeping.
Caldwell apologized in court.
