Focused on the Finish Line: The Special Formula

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (FORT WAYNE’S NBC) – As a kid, John Klotz use to sneak into Baer Field, just to get a glimpse of the race car drivers. It wasn’t too long before he was behind the wheel himself, and wanted to go faster. He began to mix a special formula of synthetic lubricants in an old garage, which helped him win races. Later on, he would sell this formula to other drivers.

“He was working on something, I didn’t understand it, but it did develop into something,” Helen Klotz, John’s wife said.

Soon after starting his own business, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, John supplied the Indianapolis 500 with his special formula. His oil would go in the engines for seven years in Indy.

“Every one of those cars had our product it in,” John said. “That was the highlight of our business.”

Despite all of the success, John hit a major speed bump, colon cancer. John and his wife, Helen, decided to take a different route for treatment.
