Gunshots fired during armed robbery leaves one man in critical condition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – An armed robbery just outside of downtown Fort Wayne turned into a gunfire exchange, leaving one man in critical condition.

Police said a man tried to rob SMS Property Management near the intersection of Lake Avenue and St. Joseph Boulevard on Friday evening.

“It gave me chills. It was kind of creepy,” said Sebastian Stauffer, a man visiting the neighborhood.

Officers said a man inside the business pulled out a gun and fought back. Police officials said both men opened fire and believed both men were struck.

Police said the would-be robber ran off and the victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

“Personally, I was thinking it was just a little too close for home,” said Roy Torres, a neighbor.

A few neighbors said they were surprised when they heard sirens and saw squad cars parked outside.

“Neighborhood for the most part is very safe so when something like this happens it’s odd,” said Torres.

Police said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. They also said evidence may suggest he was struck and injured during the shooting.
