FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – A few family members said they are concerned after learning that a FWCS special ed. staffer allegedly sexted a student and faces criminal charges.
28-year-old Devin Gilliam was charged with child solicitation and dissemination of matter harmful to a minor. The charges stem from an investigation from August 2018.
“The fact that it happened at the high school I graduated at, it makes you worry,” Serenity Braun, a North Side High School alumnus said.
Police said Gilliam sent several text messages to the victim’s phone. Officers said in one text message, Gilliam sent a full-body nude picture.
Officials said Gilliam sent the victim sexual messages including one text that told the victim she would have to sit on his lap in order to have sex, as he is confined to a wheelchair.
One North Side High School alumnus said when he heard the news, he wasn’t surprised.
“It breaks your heart,” Tommy Jones, a North Side High School alumnus said. “I mean it’s just crazy nowadays, it happens all over.”
Other folks said it needs to be a community effort when it comes to keeping kids safe.
“It does take the whole community to come together,” Steve McCord, a father of North Side High School students said. “We all have a part to play to keep everyone safe.”
“Sometimes kids don’t even have a safe place at home so when they go to school they should be able to feel safe,” Braun said.
We confirmed with the Allen County Jail that Gilliam was booked. They said he has since been released.
Editor’s note: we originally reported that the victim was wheelchair bound, but it is the suspect who is confined to a wheelchair.
