Two officers shot during training exercise at Public Safety Academy

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A gun goes off by accident, sending two Fort Wayne Police Department SWAT Team members to the hospital.

Scary moments late Tuesday afternoon for members of that special unit.

A gun fired inadvertently in an indoor shooting range, injuring the officers.

At the time of this report, there were still several unanswered questions about what went wrong, however, we do know the officers are going to be okay.

They were rushed to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

A little before 4 pm Tuesday, near the end of a SWAT team training exercise at the Fort Wayne Public Safety Academy, a weapon held by a veteran male officer went off when it wasn’t supposed to.

Sources say the bullet pierced the officer’s hand, then ricocheted, striking another veteran officer in either the leg or foot.

A team from the department’s internal affairs unit and a police shooting team interviewed other officers who were present, to try and shed more light on the chain of events.

A department spokesperson was unable to clear up if the incident happened during routine target practice on the range, of if team members were practicing for something like a standoff or active shooter scenario.

We are told the city police force has experienced nothing like this in years.

In the late 1980’s, city police dealt with a training exercise shooting that turned deadly, marking a painful chapter in the department’s history.

Recruit Omega Graham was shot and killed when an officer in charge of the training didn’t realize his gun was loaded.

The weapon was pointed at Graham and it fired, killing the recruit.
