‘It’s a pain that I don’t wish upon anyone’ ; Victim’s cousin recounts memories after murder suspect found guilty

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Family members spoke out after a jury found Deyante Stephens guilty on three counts of murder and use of a gun.

Police arrested Deyante Stephens on January 20, 2018. Stephens was accused of killing Preonda Jones, Brianna Gould and her unborn child inside a home located on Lillie Street.

The jury found Stephens guilty on three counts of murder and use of a gun on Thursday evening.

“I was shocked. I just know my brother and that doesn’t fit his character at all,” Rashad Webb, brother of Stephens said. “I feel like I failed as a big brother like I say he looked up to me. I feel like if I was there for him a little bit more, maybe he wouldn’t have taken that route.”

“I was hurt. I was depressed because at the end of the day I have a son with him,” Javonuna Bryant, ex-wife of Stephens said. “It’s going to hurt my son too, but I have to be a better mother and step up to the plate and be a stronger mother for my son.”

One of the victim’s cousin said the verdict gave her family closure. She said she hopes the verdict can help her family begin to heal.

“I would tell her I love her so much and I wish things would have been different.”

Stephens will be sentenced another day.

We will update you once that happens.
