As Fort Wayne’s NBC first reported, the Ossian Police Department responded to a home in the 500 block of Greenwood Trail on reports of a baby having trouble breathing last Monday.

Scheiber was caring for the girl on Jan. 7 and called 911 that morning to report the child not breathing properly and having stiff legs.

He told dispatchers that she must have fallen out of her crib.

Scheiber told police that he put the girl in her crib and went to get dressed in another room when he says he heard a thump from her room.

He told police he found her lying face-down on the ground.

Once at the hospital, doctors say the child wasn’t responsive, had bruising to her head along with other injuries consistent with a violent shaking injury as well as blunt force trauma.

The doctor said it is extremely unlikely that she could have received these injuries from a single fall.

Medical personnel tried to perform surgery to help stop the swelling of her brain, but she did not survive.

The child died on Jan. 12.

An autopsy found that she died due to blunt force injury to her head, and her death was ruled a homicide.
