POLICE: Cigarette likely to blame for local Travel Inn fire

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — A fire at the W. Coliseum Travel Inn left three people, including a firefighter, injured.

According to investigators, they believe an occupant at the motel fell asleep while smoking a cigarette.

Firefighters were called to the motel on W. Coliseum Blvd. at 1:07 a.m. Friday and found the fire in one of the rooms. The occupant in that room got out before crews arrived and had to be hospitalized for burns to his back.

Other guests were evacuated from the building. One was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. According to a report, a firefighter also suffered minor injuries.

Tony Dutton, who was staying at the motel, says he heard the commotion and looked outside.

“Couldn’t see anything from the smoke,” Dutton said. “I got my girlfriend up, got her out and grabbed fire extinguishers. Knocked on doors, made sure everyone got out. I used 4 fire extinguishers and it still didn’t even touch the flames.”

Several rooms were damaged by the fire prompting the Allen County Building Department and Neighborhood Code to come to the scene and assess the structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
