Albion babysitter charged with child molesting, murder in toddler’s death

ALBION, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Noble County Prosecutors have charged an Albion babysitter with child molesting and murder in the death of a 2 ½-year-old girl.

Trevor Wert, 42, is being held as a person of interest in the death of a toddler in Albion.

Railee Ewing was found unresponsive in the 300 block of W. Railroad Street in Albion on Nov. 1.

Officers rushed the little girl to the hospital where she died. Medical personnel saw signs of abuse, including significant bruising, and signs she had been sexually assaulted.

An autopsy found that her death was caused by multiple blunt force traumatic injuries, and her death was ruled a homicide.

The coroner noted injuries from sexual assault.

Investigators and medical personnel said this was one of the most brutal abuse cases they had seen.

Trevor L. Wert, 42, is being charged with child molesting and murder in her death. According to investigators, Wert was babysitting her on Oct. 31, and they believe that’s when she was killed.

He was taken into questioning for the case, and he admitted to becoming angry with the girl. He admitted to officers to battering her.

Wert will appear before a judge Monday afternoon for an initial hearing.

“I want to once again commend the outstanding teamwork and coordination of the Sexual Assault Response Team and other agencies that resulted in a person of interest being quickly identified and located, and which allowed us to file formal charges so soon after the incident,” Noble County Prosecutor Erick Blackman said.

A murder conviction carries a sentence range between 45 and 65 years, while a child molesting conviction carries a sentence between 20 and 50 years.

The investigation is ongoing.
