ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Several voters we talked to say a new mailing related to Indiana’s U.S. Senate race goes too far, stepping outside the bounds of fairness.
The mailer sent to local residents, sports the heading, “Public Health Notice”.
On the front, it reads, “Alert, Children in your area are vulnerable due to a public health threat that continues uncontrolled in Allen County.”
Inside, you find an attack ad, targeting Senator Joe Donnelly, saying that he has willingly voted for extreme measures that threaten the lives of unborn children–adding later that Donnelly voted for the largest ever expansion of taxpayer funding of abortion in American history.
Carolyn Mullinax, a retired nurse, doesn’t like the fact someone reading the flyer might not take seriously a future notice that deals with a real health danger.
“It’s more of a concern to me when you see people being misled and they shouldn’t be misled about public health issues,” Mullinax said.
Brittian Carter is not against an ad opposing abortion.
But when you talk about this particular ad…
“I don’t agree with…I’ve gotten one of those myself, I didn’t care for it, I put it right in the trash,” Carter said.
The flyer is designed to give Republican Mike Braun a boost in his run for the U.S. Senate, but his campaign didn’t put it out.
We did reach out to the political action committee responsible for the mailer.
We contacted a representative for the Women Speak Out PAC out of Virginia, but at the time of the filing of this report, we hadn’t gotten a response.
An affiliated group, the not for profit Susan B. Anthony List, says it has knocked on thousands of doors in this county this election cycle, to talk with voters about Donnelly’s voting record on abortion.
Are local Democrats worried the flyer will get traction?
“I think it just went too far and I think people will feel deceived more so than necessarily what the content is once you open it,” said Misti Meehan, the Allen County Democratic Party Chairperson.
We also sought comment from the Braun campaign, but at the time of this report, had not heard back from staff members.
Senator Donnelly maintains he is anti-abortion, listing exceptions in the case of rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger.
