FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – The driver who police say fatally struck an elderly pedestrian earlier this month is embroiled in an unrelated criminal investigation.
Ekrem Nezirevic, 72, was walking near a busy Fort Wayne intersection last week when he was struck by a car and killed.
Crash reports say Amber Garrett was the driver.
Nezirevic died from his injuries and the coroner ruled his death an accident.
In an unrelated criminal investigation, Garrett is facing a neglect charge in the death of her 2-year-old son Malaki Garrett, who police say was beaten to death by Amber’s boyfriend at the time, Mitchell Vanryn.
Vanryn is facing murder, aggravated battery and domestic battery that leads to death charges in the child’s beating death.
The crash report did not list Garrett for being at fault for the crash.
At the time of this report, alcohol and drug tests related to the crash investigation are pending.
